it would only be natural that nalani's parents hated each other when they first met. some of their friends invited them along on a two week vacation to hawaii, where nalani's mother (a caucasian american woman with a lot of european in her roots) and father (a japanese-american man fluent in both english and japanese) first met; after days of complaining about each other, all it took was a couple hours alone for them to realize how they really felt. the rest of the vacation seemed, like their friends had said, "like a honeymoon."
upon their return to the states, plans were rearranged and daily lives were changed so nalani's parents could be together. they sacrificed almost everything and settled down in san francisco, california. they spent a couple years together before getting married, settling into new jobs (doctor and nurse, surprisingly enough) and moving their home base to san diego instead. it didn't take long for them to learn that nalani's mother was pregnant, and nine months later, the little girl with two middle names was born.
nalani was given her first name almost completely on the basis that it is a hawaiian name, and her parents met in hawaii. her two middle names, ayame and erato, were names both of her parents liked but couldn't decide which to give her- so they just gave her both. as little nalani grew up, she knew whenever she was in trouble because it was always a mouthful being yelled throughout the house. the three names (minus her last) just flowed over the tongue as it was called. at the age of six, she witnessed her neighbor across the street in a cheerleading uniform for her high school- and once nalani learned what it was for, she immediately told her parents she wanted to be a cheerleader.
( nalani's parents enrolled her in community classes at the age of seven, including tap, ballet, gymnastics and hip hop. she became very active in the dance/gymnastics world and stuck with it... )
